OK THIS NEWSLETTER IS A MONTH LATE BUT I STILL WANNA GET IT DONE AND OUT BEFORE AUGUST ENDS HERE WE GO
WHAT I’M WORKING ON
I mean the long and short of things is I moved!! A big big move after 5 years of living in my small cozy apartment to a bigger 2bd, and saying it was a shock to the system would be an understatement. While it was a much wanted and needed move, it’s still a big change! I spent most of summer in a haze getting used to new city sounds, new spaces, new routines, all while trying desperately to keep a buffer going and work on other things. For a sensitive ADHD person like myself, it’s been an adjustment. For better or for worse, this very often is a one woman show. I’m not kidding in that if it weren’t for the immense kindness of Isa and Meg, I wouldn’t even have a storefront. However! One place where it wasn’t a one woman show was setting up my office. Friends came and helped me paint, helped me with IKEA trips, and building the bookcases that would become the book wall of my dreams. Alex, Hopey, Jazz, I am in your debt and you are in my heart!! So! This fall is being dedicated to, of course, COMICS!! Mama’s trying to get her groove back. And to be honest after ANYC I feel jazzed and refreshed, cons always have a way of lighting my fire to MAKE THINGS!! And while I don’t do the best at anime cons, I’m very very much looking forward to RCCC in a week and change. I’ve done a lot of prep for her and I’m incredibly excited. See you soon, Portland!!
WHAT I’M WATCHING
While I would love to go into reconnecting with manga that made me want to make comics as a middle schooler, this is in the interest of time, so, gonna talk about a comfort show. DR STONE!!! Y’all this show is so stupid I love it so much. Elevator pitch? One day, because of a mysterious green light, everyone in the world turns to stone. 3700 years later, Japan’s smartest high schooler (cause of course) wakes up and finds the world turned back to its primitive state. With the help of friends he is determined to rebuild the world from scratch, one trial and error science step at a time. The writing is silly and funny, the characters are charming, and it’s really fun seeing them work to overcome obstacles with experiments and science knowledge that can be applied to real life. Also, canonically nonbinary character in there?? Francois my beloved!! And canonical bisexual king Ryusui. Sometimes I’ll start rewatching the series from the Ryusui movie cause I love him so much. He sucks, he’s wonderful, all of the above. The openings and endings are also fun and ear worms at times. Just, good series, it’s one of my favorites to put on in the background and work to.
Truly my experience with Dr Stone can be summed up like so
Episode 1: “Wow these character designs are whack. and so many catch phrases this is kinda silly”
Episode 50: “HOLY SHIT THEYRE USING THE DRONE!!!! OHHHH MY GOOODDDDD!!!!!!!”
It’s fun, I like it, end of.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO
Sometimes a popular meme song will sink its claws into me, “Run Rabbit” by Mollie Elizabeth is one of those songs. It’s a fun lil bop and honestly? An Erra song, going on her playlist, make of that what you will.
WHAT I’M EATING
A food you love becoming trendy presents such a double edged sword. Since it’s summer, let me speak a little bit about my favorite fruit, PASSION FRUIT!! It’s just, agh it’s so good. Sweet and tart with a fun seed texture, if I could eat them every day I would. You’d think I’d be happy with the rise of passion fruit in the trendy zeitgeist, however, like 75% of them get it wrong. Either they taste too artificial, don’t have the signature tartness, or are just plain gross. I spent 7 goddamn dollars on a hagen daaz passion fruit pear sorbet only to have it barely taste like either!!! It just tasted like goddamn sugar! Damnit!! But, dear readers, I will not leaving you hanging without recommending a GOOD passion fruit treat. Trader Joe’s passion fruit sorbet. Now THAT’S one that gets it right!!! And if you mix it with their vanilla ice cream (about a 50/50 ratio, or adjust depending on preferences) you get a delicious tart creamy summer delight!
SEASONAL DELIGHTS
I can’t let summer go by without saying IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY IN JULY! YAAYYY!!! I celebrated this year with japanese barbecue and karaoke with friends, and I’m truly TRULY so grateful for them. My friends are incredibly precious to me and I’m so happy they had a good time. One highlight of the night was that one of them couldn’t make it, so asked Alex in their stead to serenade me with this song. He recorded the whole thing and you can see my face go from perplexed to screaming with delight at the drop.
Summer is my favorite season for a lot of reasons, sunny, nice and warm, good food, my birthdaaayyyy, swimming, sleeping with the AC. I hope next year when I’m way more settled I can enjoy more of it to the fullest.
That’s it for now! See you in the fall! Hopefully on time this time haha
